ARRIVAL_DEPARTURE_PLATEAU
The Count of Monte Christo was imprisoned for many years. He was trapped within a construct without exposure to even his captors. Within the cave like prison the compression of time was his true oppressor…not whether he would escape or not. He began by segmenting time and trying to discover a ‘way out’…. part of his questioning was also ‘why was he here’. He was fed through a slot in the door. In this amazing work of literature hit is almost a modernist parable: he is stuck with himself in the collapse of time. His ‘biosphere’ was the only thing that would eventually collapse. The modernist spirit of ‘overcoming’ had to be constantly reinvented everyday. Should he think or the ‘other’? His captor? Should he think of himself as the other” was he the same person through time? Were his desire and his passion to escape his only objective or perhaps the only objective through or worthy of anybodies life? Escape from where? What are the real walls of prisons? Had he been the agent of his own doom through a type of hubris that put him here.
Now the operations of the telematic noosphere have a similar punch: what has been wrought? What is this in comparison to the larger world economy, which is supposed to ‘function’ in an ‘efficient and almost non-contingent manner: it is an a priori since the collapse of the Berlin wall. Perhaps it is now as if the cont of Monte Christo is lost in a labyrinth and not a small prison cell…the structure varies from claustrophobia to a warm containment. Perhaps the corridors are interesting and he feels a sense of achievement as he makes it though theses interesting chambers. Perhaps the notion of the other isn’t important and he is not lost within the structure of an ‘others’ making but this structure is his own. Perhaps ‘freedom’ of the modern was overrated? Wouldn’t he have to find his own food? Isn’t he taken care up in this interesting labyrinth? It was a peccadillo and a crime that led him here? What makes him hang on? If he were to ‘arrive at his eventual freedom he remembers that the bigger world was without rules. Here he could make his own rules. With more interactive devices and greater facilities and gadgets to a fetishism of the prison cell was clearly more like a labyrinth. There were no edges except the need or desire to jump the walls. What would it be like to jump the walls? The jump the walls? There were no walls in the electronic mashups: there were only the labyrinthine prison of the sectors: possible meetings, possible jobs, possible commodities, possible services.
connectivity is an idea? The sum total of all connected individuals now thinks that they are in a type of prison alone: what is the connection? If the telephone is the instrument that connects us with those we already have met the telemetric and especially the semantic web is that thing which connects us with those we are yet to meet. This is a prison of potentiality. The ubiquity of the situation would oppress except for the constant diversion. Perhaps the ‘guards’ involve dare part of the containment and the walls also? The ‘other’s that we see on our way starting with the original mothers womb now resemble the womb wall and take on a sort of pantheism in this environment. If we are depressed by our sense of expectation we merely lower our expectation and watch something. It is like looking at the graffiti or the colored patches on the wall as in the writings of Da Vinci who…in his genius saw that we could endlessly stare at the colored and patina patches on painted walls with a fascination of abstraction and place ourselves within them as if they are an atmosphere: the genius of scientific dissection-secretly carving up dead bodies-was after all interested in the fantasy world we would encounter by looking at the colored patches that had been placed there by man and nature: read biosphere and the meme sphere. Wasn’t this endlessly fascinating?
