Attending Prof. Dongil Lee's class leaves me fascinated but also many "?"marks all over my notebook.I think koreans are lucky to be able to experience collective ecstasy..where i come from, the question of "Why do people care so much about Soccer? " comes up all the time. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with "collective ecstasy" -- instead, for us, the answer is:-- because they bet their money on the game.
I think rituals are being eroded by capitalism. A recent story in the New York Times (July 10, 2009) illustrates this undeniable fact. The story talks about Shamanism making a come-back in Mongolia, but some Shamans are just out to make money in exchange for offers of hope, cure and relief...
The class was thought-provoking for me and reminded me of what studying has always been about... it's about getting more questions, not answers, which makes you more curious than ever and itch to get out of the classroom to find your own opinions and truths.
