Today, David took us to Artsonje. It was awesome! If you’re into alternative art venues and conceptual work made in the last few years this is a good place to look. On display right now is a solo show entitled TRAnS by Inhwan Oh. As the title implies Oh's body of work broadly explores words derived from the prefix "trans" (i.e-- transport, translate, transform and transverse) from a uniquely Korean point of view. All the projects where exceptional, but four seemed to be of particular relevance to my groups 20/20 project.
1.)"The Real Man"-- A video projection featuring the written lyrics to a famous Korean military song synced with music. (As the 10min. film progresses the lyrics become distorted and the music changes into something more club and trance like.) The format was a large-scale projection.
2.)"The Flag and I"-- Interesting commentary on individualism in Korea. Nice in terms of display: A tri-split screen of the Korean flag on three separate panels. Very Simple but effective.
3.)"Name Project: Looking for you in Seoul"-- A project encompassing the whole city, a truck, maps, people, and common Korean last names. Difficult to describe as it has many components and is still in process-- the project is taking place over the course of the show.
4.)"Lost and Found"-- Interesting way of engaging the viewer and connecting people. This piece was staged at a biennial in Korea a few years ago. The work was the literal "lost and found" of the event and the collected items became the work as well as the documentation of the losers and finders. (I'm not sure if we could do something like this but its something to think about none-the-less.)
AND if all that artwork was not enough, downstairs there are many lovely art/design books with columns in both Hangul and English. AND there are also local zines! AND unlike many zines stateside all these had an adjoining web presence! Check this one out (warning, its in Korean but the contributing artist links are mostly in English):

Also, if your like me and can't get enough of the zine/art/design scene, let me share another find: Indexhibit. I came across Indexhibit when I was looking at sse-p.com which was built with the site's web application. If you go to Indexhibit.com and look under participants you will find a slew of artist/designer websites from all over the world (who knows, maybe even a few that will be exhibiting with us at the Design Olympics in October ?!).
